Glucosamine sulfate is a glycosaminoglycan that has been shown to provide nutritional support for joint function.* Because the material is highly hygroscopic and degrades rapidly, glucosamine sulfate must be stabilized with a salt in order to remain potent and effective.

Glucosamine sulfate supplements are often complexed with sodium chloride (NaCl), which yield sodium when broken down in the body. However, we recognize that some of our customers prefer to minimize dietary sodium intake. Therefore, Tyler's Glucosamine Sulfate has been stabilized with potassium chloride (KCl). This glucosamine sulfate - 2KCl complex has an approved United States Pharmacopeia (USP) monograph. When ingested, the complex is first converted to glucosamine HCl and KCl. The glucosamine HCl is then further broken down to the usable form, glucosamine, while the potassium chloride is converted to potassium (K) and chloride (Cl). Potassium is not added to this formula. However, because of the conversion that occurs in the body, we must include the potassium content on our label.

"Sulfa” or sulfa drugs usually refer to agents in the class of drugs known as sulfonamides. Almost all sulfonamides are anti-infectives. However, sulfasalazine, which is used to treat ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, is also included.¹

Sulfur, on the other hand, is a chemical element that is widely present in the body and in nature. It is essential for the production of collagen, an important constituent of connective tissue.* Sulfur, and most sulfur-containing compounds (i.e., sulfones, sulfites, sulfates), do not exhibit cross-sensitivity with sulfonamides.¹

“Sulfa” and sulfur are not the same substance. Therefore, an allergy to “sulfa” drugs would not be expected to also result in an allergy to a product that contains sulfur.

While there have been more than 20 clinical studies of glucosamine sulfate, none have been conducted during pregnancy.¹ Pregnancy is a time of high fetal sensitivity to environmental and nutritional substances. We recommend that pregnant women discuss use of herbs, over the counter medications, and nutritional supplements with their healthcare provider prior to use.
