Integrative Therapeutics™ announces Scholarship Openings and 2010 STAIR Program Residency Sites

Integrative Therapeutics, Inc. (ITI®) and the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) have chosen the 2010 STAIRSM Residency Sites and are seeking scholarship candidates for this unique program.

Two clinics that combine the best of medicine
After reviewing all the clinics, two were recognized for their forward-thinking approach of combining the best of naturopathic and allopathic medicine — The Integrative Family Wellness Center and Naturemed. Each of these will host a fully-paid student resident for a one year residency experience in the life of an integrative practice.

The Integrative Family Wellness Center in Brookfield, Wisconsin combines family practice, chiropractic care, internal medicine, acupuncture and naturopathic medicine.

Michele Nickels, NMD, LAc is a graduate of Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and completed her naturopathic residency in family practice.  She has extensive training working in corporate wellness and has done private practice for over eight years.  Dr. Nickels works with her patients to establish a team approach to help them transition into health and healing. In her practice she offers naturopathic medical treatments for all ages and conditions. Her professional goal is to bridge the gap between naturopathic and conventional medicine.

Bozena Simon, MD is a Board Certified Internist practicing internal medicine since 1995, which she expanded into complementary medicine in 2003. She graduated from the University of Arizona Fellowship Program in Integrative Medicine directed by Dr. Andrew Weil and completed multiple training programs in functional and complementary medicine. Dr. Simon considers her mission in medicine as teaching and guiding her patients to use preventive measures, reversing the disease process whenever possible and maintaining youthfulness by slowing the aging process. She combines natural medicine approach with functional medicine diagnostic algorithms to find underlying metabolic imbalances in order to design individualized healing programs for every patient. www.ifwcenter.com

NatureMed Clinic, LLC, in Boulder, Colorado is an integrated clinic with training in Western, Eastern, alternative, complementary, and holistic medicine.

Stephen W. Parcell, ND, is certified in chelation therapy through the College for the Advancement of Medicine, and is a certified Defeat Autism Now practitioner. He also completed a two-year residency in integrative medicine and advanced longevity medicine with anti aging specialist Terry Grossman, MD.  Dr. Parcell has a strong research background has published articles in medical journals and recently authored a chapter for the textbook Integrative Pain Medicine. Dr. Parcell has been practicing since 2002, is an expert in evidence based natural medicine and has a great interest in heart health. He is currently writing book on preventive cardiology. While at Bastyr, he co-authored National Institutes of Health research grant proposals and worked for the research department. Other strengths include intravenous therapies, integrative oncology, male hormone replacement and environmental medicine.

Fran Mason, MD, is board certified in internal medicine and oncology and specializes in sports medicine at all levels – recreational, competitive, elite, and Olympian. She is a graduate of Swarthmore College and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Thereafter; she had 6 years of postgraduate training including specialty fellowship in hematology and oncology and chief residency in medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Her academic positions have included professorships at Penn Medical School and the University of Colorado. A recognized fitness expert, Dr. Mason has a comprehensive understanding of integrative medicine, and believes that optimal performance requires the right mix of hard training and meticulous attention to the unique physiological needs of each individual. Her specialties include integrative oncology, physical recovery after cancer treatment and sports medicine.

Kelly Parcell, ND is a women's health expert. Her practice almost exclusively focuses on gynecology, fertility and endocrinology. Dr. Kelly graduated from Bastyr University in 2000 with a doctorate in naturopathic medicine. She went on to intern at the Tahoma clinic under the direction of Jonathan Wright, MD and practiced as a primary care doctor in Washington State for two years specializing in woman's health. Her specialty also includes adrenal dysfunction, weight issues, bio-identical hormone replacement, intravenous therapies and chronic fatigue.  www.naturemedclinic.com

They participate in the whole spectrum of clinic life, from patient care to the daily financial workings of the practice creating a well rounded experience in practice management. This unique scholarship will offer two fully paid postdoctoral naturopathic residencies. The residency provides an amazing opportunity for new graduates to experience a truly integrated residency with time spent at both a naturopathic practice and an MD managed
integrative medicine practice.

ITI has been a strong advocate for the Naturopathic community since the company's inception over 30 years ago in Portland, Oregon. Naturopathic physicians have played a key role in the company's development and ITI is proud to partner with the AANP to help ensure future leadership in integrative medicine, foster the expansion of graduate medical education, and support licensing for Naturopathic Physicians.

These residencies provide real world experience for graduates in practicing natural medicine and running a naturopathic and integrative medicine clinic.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Graduating senior or recent ND graduate (within one year) from an accredited US based naturopathic college (Bastyr, NCNM, SCNM, Bridgeport).
  • Grades must be of superior or satisfactory performance in all classes.
  • Interest in fully paid residency program at leading integrative medicine clinic.
  • Successful completion of the NPLEX and ability to secure a license to practice.

The STAIR Program Grants a Unique Residency for Naturopathic Physicians

Integrative Therapeutics, Inc. (ITI®) and the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) are pleased to announce this year’s recipients of the ITI-AANP STAIRSM Residency Scholarships. This unique scholarship program, now it its third year, gives the residents a fully paid, one year residency in both a naturopathic practice and an integrative medicine practice.

“The AANP whole-heartedly thanks ITI for their commitment to making it happen,” stated Lise Alschuler, AANP President. “Congratulations to the 2009 ITI STAIR residency recipients, Dr. Sage Wheeler, from Bastyr University and Dr. Meghan Larivee from National College of Naturopathic Medicine.” “Increasing the number of residencies available to naturopathic physicians is vital to the community, she added, “thank you ITI.”

Sage Wheeler

Dr. Sage Wheeler will be spending his residency at the Integrated Health Center in Redmond, WA. He will be working with Brooke Azie-Rentz, ND, primary care physician and Stephanie Baker, MD, who specializes in preventive medicine. "The STAIR residency offers an excellent opportunity to work with healthcare professionals who work in a truly integrative team care approach, Wheeler commented, “The union of all medical modalities, applied in a logical and holistic fashion, is the future of healthcare. I am excited to be a part of it at such an early stage."

Meghan Larivee

Dr. Meghan Larivee will spend her residency at the Institute for Restorative Health, located in Davis, California. She will be working with Eric Hassid, MD, the founder and medical director and Marco Vespignani, ND, medical director of Restorative Health services. "I look forward to collaborating with such a talented group of providers and the opportunity to learn from their expertise,” she stated, “I hope to serve my patients well, using an integrative approach to address their individual health care needs, and I believe this residency will be a great fit!"
