New Study Shows Corvalen® D-Ribose Meets Nutritional Needs of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia Sufferers

Research led by Jacob Teitelbaum, MD shows significant symptom improvement after three weeks of Corvalen®

GREEN BAY, WI (February 9, 2010) — A new study reveals Corvalen®, a medical food containing the naturally occurring five carbon sugar, D-ribose, substantially improve  the quality of life in patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia Syndrome (CFS/FMS). The multicenter study, led by Jacob Teitelbaum, MD*, a specialist in CFS/FMS, was co-sponsored by Integrative Therapeutics, Inc. and Bioenergy, Inc.

CFS/FMS are debilitating syndromes affecting 2-4% of the population. Symptoms vary and can include infections, autoimmune illnesses and hormonal dysfunctions, but the most common denominator is impaired energy metabolism. In a prior pilot study, D-ribose was shown to increase cellular energy synthesis in the heart and skeletal muscle and significantly improve clinical outcomes in CFS/FMS.  In this larger, community-based, multicenter trial, 53 health practitioners enrolled 257 patients with CFS/FMS.  All patients were given Corvalen D-ribose at a dose of 5-g for three weeks.

Patients filled out a questionnaire rating their energy level, quality of sleep, mental clarity, pain levels and overall sense of well-being.  After three weeks of treatment,
study results showed vastly improved energy, a 61% increase. CFS/FMS patients also reported decreased pain and increased sleep quality, mental clarity and overall well-being. Improvement began in the first week of treatment and D-ribose was well-tolerated with no significant adverse side effects.

The success of Corvalen as a medical food for the dietary management of CFS/FMS in this three week study-suggests that further improvement may occur with longer use.

Because D-ribose doesn’t exist as a free-standing compound in foods, it can’t  be addressed through diet alone and must be produced in the body from other dietary nutrients. Corvalen fulfills this nutritional requirement and under the direction of a healthcare practitioner,  it’s used in the management of conditions where energy depleted tissues can’t produce ribose quickly enough to meet cellular energy demands.
